With a ready supply of Oamaru Stone the early settlers built many beautiful buildings from the Oamaru stone with many of these buildings having luckily escape demolition in the years that followed. About the 1980s some began to see the beauty and historical value of these buildings and over time they were restored and the old buildings were slowly given a new life and varied purposes. This itself attracted wonderful artistic and artisan people who enhanced the buildings and the character of Oamaru. Next came steampunk further enhancing Oamaru character.
