Chanonry Cottage was built almost a century ago to serve as home to the Chanonry Lighthouse keeper and his family. In the 1970's and 1980's, it was subject to a number of extensions to include the construction of a second floor where the bedrooms, bathroom (there is a second bathroom on the ground floor) and TV room are all located.
This TV room, which also serves as a second lounge, enjoys some of the very best views to be found anywhere in the Scottish Highlands.
On the ground floor are to be found a spacious lounge with wood fired stove, a cosy dining room and a well equipped kitchen, all of which are cool in the summer months, thanks to massive stone exterior walls and warm in the winter due to double glazed windows and the oil fired central heating system.
The cottage is located in its own well manicured garden with terrace where guests can relax and soak up the unique surroundings.
Chanonry Point is an extraordinary place. It’s location on the tip of a spit of land which extends into the Moray Firth allows for uninterrupted 360 degree views of all of the surrounding areas. The light house, which is little more than a stone’s throw away from the cottage, was built in the 1840’s to guide ships sailing up and down the Firth.
Fort George, which is a little further away across the water, was built immediately following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie and is reputed to be the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not the whole of Europe. The entrance to the Cromarty Firth, with its deep waters carved over centuries by glaciers, is some 6 miles from the Point.
This waterway leads to the port town of Invergordon, the most popular cruise ship destination in Scotland. It is not unusual therefore to see cruise ships come and go from a distance. And then there is Loch Ness which is less than an hour’s drive from Fortrose and which, according to mythology, is home to an elusive Monster…
