A little bit of history: Carriage A – AL56106 (originally A1923), was built in 1938 at the Otahuhu Railway Workshops as a non-smoking, second-class car. Carriage A had two lavatories and two compartments with 28 seats each. Based in Auckland, it was used on the Auckland-Wellington express trains for about forty years. It would have passed through Ohakune thousands of times during that period. In 1980 the lavatories were removed, additional seats were fitted (bringing the seat count to 60) and it then served on the Auckland suburban network until 1993. Following the purchase of diesel railcars for Auckland, AL56106 was retired, relocated to Palmerston North and put up for sale by TranzRail. In 1996 it was purchased by Rimu Park Lodge, railed to Rangataua Station just south of Ohakune and transported from the station to its current location in Rimu Street by truck. Our pair of carriages sit parallel to the main trunk line facing south as if they were heading off to Wellington. You'll also notice, in the photos above, a photo of the carriage in cityrail livery, taken in Auckland in 1986.
