2 Bedroom Apartment in Dunbar
We have been letting our snug central garden flat for holidays since 2009. Before booking, message to check availability - we would rather there was no pressure for you to book now so that you can have questions answered first.
The flat is the lower third of a Georgian Town House also known as Templelands (built c1820), but the flat has a traditional compact cottage feel. It was the servants quarters and kitchens with direct access to the garden. It is decorated modestly and unpretentiously in shabby chic fashion. Now converted with 2 bedrooms, it sleeps max 2 adults and 2 children. Unsuitable for longer lets, larger parties or partying. Anything more and it will be a squeeze. We are pet free. At present we allow 1 day/s between bookings.
Overall the flat retains the patina, character and history of a 200 year old cottage, with a small quiet cottage garden.
Many remember that 2 Templelands was a doctor's surgery for many many years, and then owned by the nationally important Scottish ceramicist Margery Clinton renown for her lustreware, before becoming a private home.
Templelands is strictly non-smoking and pet-free.
We stay upstairs most of the year, so are on hand should you have a problem.
To access the small quiet garden you do have to go up a few steps at the back. You will be rewarded with a pleasant outlook and interest in all seasons. You are only a few minutes walk to the sea and the harbour on the one hand and a range of High Street shops are all nearby, with easy and free parking nearby.
Pleasant walks along East Lothian, Scottish Borders coast/countryside. Edinburgh is 20 minutes by train.
Suit small families / couples with passion for outdoors, countryside, photography, heritage, and culture for short stays of 3-7 days most of the year.
Check with us if you have special needs.

Dunbar is a relatively quiet town, off the beaten tourist trail (mostly centred around North Berwick and Gullane) but really close to Edinburgh and Berwick upon Tweed. Visiting northern England and Northumberland for day trips is practical by train or by car. Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island are worth a visit, and The Alnwick Garden, in Alnwick (with its famous second hand book store) is not far away. Tourist attractions are many, but you'll probably want to stay here if you want to mix countryside walks or bracing hikes on hills and by the sea with trips to the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. East Lothian and the Borders are rich with history and archaeology. The Votadini tribe occupied Traprain Law, between Haddington and Dunbar, a volcanic plug not dissimilar to North Berwick Law and Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. The geology and wildlife is as fascinating as the historical and archaeological heritage. There are many miles of protected coast, with the most outstanding example the Bass Rock, with a bird colony counting in excess of 50,000. Not to be missed. If you are up for it, you can hire bikes and take to the gently rolling countryside or the hills if you have the strength and stamina.
East Lothian is most famous for its golf tourism, but you probably knew that. But there are a number of excellent sandy beaches for surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing. Dunbar has its own local surf school. Divers will find that Dunbar has wrecks and treasures of its own, but close enough to St Abbs, which is world famous (with stunning rugged coastline). You can enjoy boat trips to the Bass Rock or for sea fishing. Fishing from the shore (after a good storm is best) or from the harbour wall. Fly fishing in the right conditions / season is also available and we are not so far from famous Salmon rivers like the River Tweed.
Templelands: The Knights Templar may have owned the land that Templelands is built upon. The historical evidence is tantalising with the site of a Carmelite Monastery nearby and there is at least one published reference.
The house itself is a compact terraced town house, one of a pair dating back to the late eighteenth century. A listed property mainly on account of the elegant frontage, including characteristic ionic columns, as well as interesting internal features, including a winding cantilevered stone staircase.
In between excursions you are welcome to use the Shared Garden at Templelands. It is a small managed garden laid out to herbaceous beds, a micro meadow, a few fruit trees and a tiny vegetable plot. It is mostly peaceful and quiet, but the seagulls will remind you that you are by the sea. With a pleasant outlook towards the sea, if you are very very lucky you'll see dolphins or even whales, but most of the year you'll just have to watch the gannets fish or fly by. There are different seating areas and a patio away from the house, area where you can take breakfast or sit and read.
