The Old Smithy Cottage is situated by Loch Linnhe, the spectacular view on the loch takes your eyes over to the small island where you will frequently see seals on the rocks and an array of other wildlife. To the left under the Connel bridge you can see the start of the Falls of Lora, where two currents meet and whirlpools form, this is a very popular area for canoeists, RIB boats and photographers. The Old Smithy Cottage lies on the outskirts of of the village of Connel, which has a couple of good restaurants and pubs. Oban is only 5 miles away from Oban where there are lots more restaurants, café, bars and some nightlife which, on the west coast, tends to be ceilidhs.
From Oban you can sail over to Mull and drive around the beautiful island, visiting Tobermoray (also known as Balamoray), go over to the monastery on Iona and take a boat trip to Fingal’s Cave. A nice day trip is to go over to Mull from Oban but return on the Fishnish-Lochaline route which allows you to take in some of the beauty of the Morvern Peninsula, or if you prefer to do that on another day where you can drive up to Fort William and go on the traditional steam train that runs from Fort William to Mallaig (this must be booked well in advance), or take the road to the Isles (Mallaig) and stop at the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct which is also in the Harry Potter films.
The fishing village of Mallaig has great fish and chips whilst you wait for your return train. Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK) is also in Fort William so your day would be full on if you were also going to enjoy a wee stroll up the Ben! There are so many different places to visit that a week is not long enough, so, if you don’t get to do Glencoe, Inveraray, Easdale Island etc you will just have to sit on the terrace and plan your next trip to the haven of the Old Smithy Cottage. Beach 6 miles..
